The gold 50 ECU is a well-known gold investment coin. The 50 ECU (1987) has a purity of 900/1000, has a gross weight of 17.28 grams and was issued at the foundation of the European Monetary Union.

The 50 ECU coin
In the 1980’s, it was proposed to the countries of the then European Community to create one common currency. The initial idea was to name the unity currency the ECU, or European Currency Unit. And even though the unity currency would eventually be baptized “Euro”, several countries minted collector coins with the name ECU, in memory to the first steps towards a European Monetary Union. Belgium was one of the countries to produce ECU coins.

Purity and weight

The ECU coins have been issued in various sizes and weights. There have been coins of 10, 20, 25, 50 and 100 ECU. The 50 ECU coin exists in two varieties. In 1987, a 50 ECU coin was minted with a purity of 90%, a gross weight of 17.28 grams and a net weight of 15.55 grams, or half a troy ounce. In the period from 1989 to 1998, other varieties of the 50 ECU coin were minted. These coins are 99.99% pure and weigh 15.55 grams each.
