Detailed product description
The 2 South-African rand is a golden investment coin that was struck yearly between 1961 & 1983, by the Rand Refinery. The 2 South-African rand is a historic gold coin struck with a purity of 91,67% (22 carat) gold and has a gross weight of 7.99 grams with a pure gold content of 7,32 grams.
The golden 2 South-African rand
The gold 2 rand, along with the 1 rand, was minted between 1961 & 1983. Afterwards, these coins disappeared from the scene and were replaced by the smaller denominations of the Krugerrand. Thus, the 2 South African rand was replaced by the 1/4 Krugerrand and the 1/10 Krugerrand replaced the 1 rand. This made the coin popular not only with investors, but also with numismatists.
Purity & weight
The golden 2 South-African rand has a purity of 916,7/1.000 (22 carats) and a net weight of 7,32 grams. The remaining 0,67 grams consist of copper which causes the coin to become damaged less quickly, necessary to withstand the wear by regular circulation.
This typical alloy of 91,67% gold and 8,33% copper was introduced in the United Kingdom as "crown gold" and would later be taken over by several nations of the Commonwealth of Nations and other powers.
Design of the golden 2 South-African rand
The obverse of the South African rim features the effigy of Jan van Riebeeck, founder of the first Dutch settlements at the Cape of Good Hope: Fort de Goede Hoop and Fort Duijnhoop, which would later evolve into Cape Town. Around his portrait is the slogan "Eendrag maak mag" & "Unity is strength" in the two official national languages of South Africa.
The reverse of the gold rim features an image of a springbok - the national symbol of South Africa - which is also found on the Krugerrand. The springbok is also a reference to Witwatersrand, a mountain range in South Africa's Gauteng province, famous because 40% of all the world's gold comes from here.
Right below the image of the springbok, you will see the initials of the designer; Coert Laurens Steynberg. In addition, on the reverse you will find the coin's nonimale value, 2R, as well as the year of issue. Around the springbok you will find the reference 'Suid-Afrika' and 'South Africa'.
