The 20 French francs Rooster // Marianne was produced from 1899 to 1914, making it the last of the French gold coins. France was forced to leave the gold standard of the Latin currency because of the outbreak of WW I. On the front of the coins is a picture of Marianne to the design of Jules-Clément Chaplain. Marianne, a national symbol of France and symbol of the "Triumph of the Republic", freedom and reason, is pictured here with a frygian hat. This symbolizes the French people who were finally liberated after a period of slavery (the feudal system).
On the backside of the coins is the Galician rooster, or Coq Gaulois, which was the national symbol of France during the French Revolution. He stands for the vigilance, the confidence and the struggle that one had to bear in this turbulent period.
