Kangaroo | 1/10 troy ounce

 

The Australian Nugget // Kangaroo is produced annually by the Perth Mint and was first introduced in 1986. The name 'Nugget' originally referred to the picture of the gold nuggets on the back of the coin from 1986 to 1989. 
Each of the four then existing denomination (1 troy ounce, 1/2 ounce, 1/4 ounce and 1/10 ounce) got the image of another gold nugget on her back. For example, on the bullion version of the 1 troy ounce Nugget is the image of the 'Welcome Stranger'; A gold nugget of no less than 71,08 kg, found 3 cm below the earth's surface by John Deason and Richard Oates in 1869 in Moliagul, Victoria, Australia. On the bullion versions of the smaller denominationswere the images of the 'Hand of Faith', the 'Golden Eagle' and the 'Little Hero'.

 

In 1989, the Australian Mint eventually decided to change the coin side design and replace the image of the gold nuggets with a picture of a kangaroo. The kangaroo was a much more familiar signboard for Australia than gold mining. Since then, another picture of a kangaroo on the coin side of the Australian Nugget // Kangaroo has been featured. Unlike the first coins, all the Nugget // Kangaroo denominations have since been given the same image on the back. Gold Nugget // Kangaroo coins are legal tender coin in Australia and are therefore one of the few legal tender bullion coins that change design every year. As a consequence, and by the annual limited number of coins minted, the numismatic value may momentarily increase beyond the intrinsic value. 

 

The gold 1/10 Australian Kangaroo has a purity of 999,9/1.000 (24 carats) and weighs exactly 3,11 grams (1/10 troy ounce). Thanks to this purity, the Kangaroo is a real investment coin and very easy to trade worldwide. 

 

On the front of the 1/10 Kangaroo you will see the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of the Commonwealth of Nations. Around her portrait you see left and right, respectively, her name 'Queen Elizabeth II' and 'Australia'. At the bottom of the coin you will find the nominal value, $15.

 

Since 1989, you'll find the image of a kangaroo on the back of the coin. The design of that image has changed since then. At the top is the name of the coin 'Australian Kangaroo'. Below you find the year of issue together with the weight and purity content - 1/10 oz 9999 GOLD - from the coin.

 

The 1/10 Australian Kangaroo and other gold coins are perfectly suitable as a purchase of physical gold. Gold coins are not taxed because they are considered monetary gold.
