The gold Vienna Philharmonic is issued annually by the Austrian Mint and has a purity of 99,99% and weighs exactly 1 troy ounce (31,10 grams). The Vienna Philharmonic was first introduced in 1989, which made it the first European gold bullion coin. In 1992, 1995, 1996 & 2000 the Vienna Philharmonic was the best selling gold coin worldwide.

The gold Vienna Philharmonic is issued annually by the MĆ¼nze Ćsterreich en was introduced in 1989. The coin gets its name from the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra which also inspired the design of the coin.
The Vienna Philharmonic is currently the only bullion coin with a European face value, but even though its value is expressed in euro's it is only considered as legal tender in Austria.

Design of the gold Vienna Philharmonic
The obverse shows the image of the organ of the infamous GroĪ²er Musikvereinssaal, also known as the Goldener Saal (Golden Hall). Mentioned above you see the inscription 'Republik Ćsterreich' and at the bottom you find the weight of the coin together with the level of purity, the year of mintage and the face value.
The reverse shows the image of several instruments, the Viennese horn, the bassoon, the harp, four violins and a cello. The instruments symbolise the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, housed in the Wiener Musikverein. Mentioned above you see the inscription 'Wiener Philharmoniker'. Both the obverse and reverse were designed by the Austrian Mint's head engraver Thomas Pessendorfer.
