Silver Krugerrand

The silver South-African Krugerrand is issued annually by the Rand Refinery. It was introduced in 2017 in honour of the 50th birthday of the gold Krugerrand coin.

Purity & weight

The silver Krugerrand has a purity of 999/1.000 pure and weighs exactly 31,10 grams (1 troy ounce). Its purity and weight make it a proper bullion coin, acknowledged worldwide and easy to trade. The monster box contains 20 tubes of 25 coins, which makes 15.550,00 grams of fine silver per box.

Design of the silver South-African Krugerrand

The face of the silver Krugerrand shows an image of Paul Kruger, the 5th and last president of the Transvaal, the former South African Republic. Paul Kruger was elected president of the Transvaal on December 30, 1880, after which he served three more terms. Under his leadership, the then bankrupt Transvaal transformed into a prosperous and strong Boer state.
The reverse side of the silver Krugerrand has an image of a springbok - the national symbol of South-Africa - which can also be found on the South African Rand. The springbok also refers to Witwatersrand, a mountain range in the province of Gauteng, South-Africa, where 40% of all the gold in the world comes from.
At the right under the image of the springbok you can find the initials of the designer, Coert Laurens Steynberg. The bottom of the reverse side mentions the name of the coin, the year of issue and the purity and weight of the coin in South-African and English; ‘fynsilwer 1 oz fine silver’. Contrary to the gold Krugerrand, the silver Krugerrand does have a face value, namely 1 rand. This can be found on the reverse as well.

Buying a silver South-African Krugerrand

The silver Krugerrand and other silver coins serve perfectly as a purchase of physical silver. Opposed to silver bars you needn't pay VAT because silver coins are traded under the VAT margin regulation.
